Why Roofing Contractors Should Be Insured

You need a new roof, but you may be unsure of what construction company to hire. They all seem like they are on the up and up with plenty of experience and fair pricing, but why do some cost significantly more than others? When researching Roofing Contractors, it is important that you know if they are insured. They may be more expensive, but much of that cost is comprised of fees which include insurance which protect you, the homeowner, in the event of an accident. Because it is your property, you are liable for any injury sustained on your property, which could potentially cost tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees and medical bills. All of which would come out of your wallet. The last thing you want as a homeowner is to be liable for an accident that you had absolutely no fault in, so it is imperative that you do your research and confirm that the contractor has General Liability Insurance.

Roofing is an extremely dangerous job. One stray gust of wind or an accidental slip could prove disastrous, especially when the contractor is working several stories in the air. In fact, roofing is ranked as the 5th most dangerous construction job with a death rate of almost 30 work-related deaths per 100,000 workers. Nearly twice as high as in all general construction combined.

Workman's Compensation is also a very important bit of insurance for your contractor to have. If an employee or subcontractor of the roofing company you have hired happens to sustain an injury on your property, the Workman's Compensation Insurance will cover any wages. This is important because it prevents the employee from suing the contractor or you for their lost earnings.

Another reason to hire an insured roofing contractor is that many of them pay bonds which act as a form of insurance to protect you, the homeowner, in case they fail to complete the job in a correct fashion. This can also protect you from damages from mistakes that happen on the job. Accidents do happen, and sometimes they can result in thousands of dollars in damages to your home, which unfortunately might need to be fixed by another contractor. What’s worse, is that a contractor that isn’t licensed and isn’t insured may just walk away from the job, leaving you to pick up the pieces of the mess behind. Many people might wonder why it is that they might be held liable for actions taken by the contractor. The reality is that in the absence of a licensed professional, the law sees you as the general contractor.

Roofing is one of the hardest jobs, not to mention one of the most dangerous. Hiring someone you personally know that is less expensive might be tempting, however uninsured contractors can cost you more money in the long run. It is important that you spend that little bit extra and hire a contractor with the right qualifications, the right knowledge, experience, and the right protection for you, your home and your family.
